7 Reed
A term applied to the number of threads in a given space, usually 1/4-in. or 1-in. Shippers and makers understand the term " 17 reed " to mean 64 ends per inch in the cloth, that is 4 down. When a cloth is indicated by a reed in the quarter-inch count it usually means that the number of threads per inch is 4 less than the reed number X by 4. If the ends per inch are stated, it means that number actual. ———————— A metal comb fixed in a frame; the closeness of its wires determines the fineness of a cloth; it keeps the warp threads spaced evenly, forms a guide for the back of the shuttle, and beats up the weft to the fell of the cloth. Wires are fixed in the baulks at the top and bottom and the number of dents in one inch determines the counts. These wires are set equi-distant by tarred wrapping cords. The counts of a reed are stamped on the binder rods at the end. If required two black wires are set exactly one inch apart near the middle of the reed, the number of dents between indicating the count of the reed. -

12 operational gearing
Finthe relationship of the fixed cost to the total cost of an operating unit. The greater the proportion of total costs that are fixed (high operational gearing), the greater the advantage to the organization of increasing sales volume. Conversely, should sales volumes drop, a highly geared organization would find the high proportion of fixed costs to be a major problem, possibly causing a rapid swing from profitability into significant loss-making. -
13 Frames
Here is the essence of the theory: when one encounters a new situation (or makes a substantial change in one's view of the present problem) one selects from memory a substantial structure called a frame. This is a remembered framework to be adapted to fit reality by changing details as necessary.A frame is a data-structure for representing a stereotyped situation, like being in a certain kind of living room, or going to a child's birthday party. Attached to each frame are several kinds of information. Some of this information is about how to use the frame. Some is about what one can expect to happen next. Some is about what to do if these expectations are not confirmed. We can think of a frame as a network of nodes and relations. The "top levels" of a frame are fixed, and represent things that are always true about the supposed situation. The lower levels have many terminals"slots" that must be filled by specific instances or data.... Collections of related frames are linked together into frame systems. The effects of important actions are mirrored by transformations between the frames of a system. These are used to make certain kinds of calculations economical, to represent changes of emphasis and attention, and to account for the effectiveness of "imagery."For visual scene analysis, the different frames of a system describe the scene from different viewpoints, and the transformations between one frame and another represent the effects of moving from place to place. For nonvisual kinds of frames, the differences between the frames of a system can represent actions, cause-effect relations, or changes in metaphorical viewpoint. Different frames of a system share the same terminals; this is the critical point that makes it possible to coordinate information gathered from different viewpoints. 14 Soldes, les
Sales (in the sense of cut-price sales). In theory, France has strict laws governing sales. There are two periods of the year when shops can put on sales, one in January-February ( les Soldes d'hiver), and the other in July ( les Soldes d'été). The precise dates are fixed by the governement, and may vary from town to town. Other than closing-down sales, these periods are the only times of the year when shops can announce that they are having 'sales'.As a result, most shops and traders' associations revert to various other forms of terminology, and sales techniques, to put on events that are soldes in all but name. Les 3-Jours, or Quinzaine commerciale, or journées discount are three examples. Alternatively, shops fill their shelves with special offers.See also Braderie.Dictionnaire Français-Anglais.
